About Bristol Motor Speedway (Dirt)

Bristol Dirt was the temporary dirt configuration of Bristol Motor Speedway, used for Cup Series racing from 2021 through 2023. NASCAR covered the half-mile concrete oval with truckloads of red clay for one weekend each spring, producing the first Cup Series dirt race since 1970. The dirt configuration was deeply polarizing among fans and teams: some loved the throwback aesthetic and chaotic racing, while others objected to the visibility issues caused by airborne dirt and the way the surface failed to match the speed characteristics of a traditional dirt short track. Bristol Dirt was retired after 2023 and the Spring Bristol race returned to the concrete oval starting in 2024. The dirt configuration is preserved here as a historical entry tied to the Bristol stats aggregation.
