About Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course (Roval)

The Charlotte Roval debuted in 2018 as NASCAR's first true oval-and-road-course hybrid configuration, combining a section of the original 1.5-mile quad-oval with a tight, technical infield road course. The 2.28-mile, 17-turn layout was created specifically to host a Cup Series playoff cutoff race and immediately produced one of the most dramatic moments in modern NASCAR history when Jimmie Johnson and Martin Truex Jr. collided in the final corner of the inaugural race, gifting the win and the playoff advancement to Ryan Blaney. The Roval continues to host the Bank of America Roval 400 as the Round of 16 cutoff event each fall, and the combination of banked-oval speed and road-course braking has produced more playoff drama than any other single track on the schedule.

The Roval's bus-stop chicane on the frontstretch is so unforgiving that drivers have repeatedly ended their playoff hopes by overshooting it on the final lap. Designers built the chicane specifically to slow cars on the oval section.
