About Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course hosted Cup Series racing from 2021 through 2023 as part of NASCAR's road-course expansion era. The 14-turn, 2.439-mile infield circuit weaves through the grounds of the famous IMS oval and uses portions of the front straight at full throttle before diving into a series of tight technical chicanes. The track was originally built in 2000 for the U.S. Formula One Grand Prix and has hosted MotoGP, IndyCar, and IMSA sports-car racing in the years since. Cup competition moved to the road course from 2021 to 2023 as a temporary measure while the Cup Series tested expanded road-course options, then returned to the original IMS oval and the Brickyard 400 in 2024.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course incorporates the long Indy 500 frontstretch at full throttle, then breaks for a bus-stop chicane on the back portion of the oval. The combination makes it one of the highest-average-speed road courses in major U.S. motorsport.
