About Auto Club Speedway
Auto Club Speedway opened in 1997 in Fontana, California, as the West Coast counterpart to Michigan International Speedway, sharing a similar 2-mile D-shaped oval design. The track hosted Cup Series racing every season from 1997 through 2023, becoming one of the signature venues of the Cup Series' West Coast swing and producing memorable races thanks to its wide racing surface and progressively worn-in asphalt. Auto Club is currently inactive: NASCAR and track ownership announced plans in 2022 to transform the existing 2-mile oval into a half-mile short track, with the original facility partially demolished and the new short-track project paused as of the 2026 season. The track may return to the Cup schedule once the redevelopment completes, but no firm date has been announced.
The final Cup race at the original Auto Club Speedway ran in February 2023 and was won by Kyle Busch in a wreck-shortened finish. The track was then partially demolished as preparation for the planned short-track redevelopment.
